How to clean your dishwasher
Have you ever thought about how many dishes, glasses and cookware your dishwasher cleans throughout the year? Eating two or three meals at home can lead to a full load for a family all in one day, and when you think about the other 364 days of the year, the sheer amount of work your dishwasher does is amazing - not to mention the parties, family gatherings and more.
The average family dishwasher cleans over 8,000 dirty items, but, have you ever thought about who cleans the cleaner? Maybe you have, but if you haven’t, then you may not realise the importance of a good clean that your dishwasher might need.
It’s recommended to clean your dishwasher with Finish Dishwasher Cleaner about once a month so that it’s leaving your dishes as clean and hygienic as they should be. All in all, the steps below should only take a few minutes so no need to set a whole day aside!
Step 1: Use Finish Dishwasher Cleaner
Some food particles can end up in the sprayer arm, or grease and limescale can build up on the hidden but vital parts of a dishwasher. Dishwasher cleaner is easy to use and can take this on. It effortlessly cleans the machine leaving it shiny. It’s a great way to keep your dishwasher clean with little fuss.
Grease and limescale can build up throughout your machine, including the filter and hidden parts you can’t get to. Finish Dishwasher Cleaner removes grease and limescale to leave your machine looking clean and smelling fresh!
For instructions, all you need to do is remove the sticker from the top of the bottle, place upside down in a secure position, and set the dishwasher on to a high temperature wash cycle.

Step 2: Clean the Exterior and Rubber Seals
Often overlooked, the front of the dishwasher is usually plastic and can be washed down with some disinfectant spray or warm soapy water. Dirt and food waste can get caught in the dishwasher door hinges and around the rubber side seals that don’t come into contact with water. Remove this dirt by fully opening the dishwasher and wiping away (an old tooth brush also works well getting into all the crevices). Be careful around the dishwasher controls, usually located at the top of the door, as excessive moisture could damage the electrics.
Step 3: Remove Waste Food & Clean the Filter
It’s important to get to grips with the ins and outs of your wonderful appliance - in particular, how to give it a good clean to avoid any bad smells. Every dishwasher is different, so it’s a good idea to check the manual for tips on things like how to clean the filter.
One thing most dishwashers have in common is a detachable cylindrical filter which is usually located at the bottom of the dishwasher. There should be a screen covering the top to prevent larger pieces of food from clogging up the machine - this can also be removed and rinsed through with warm water.
After removing both pieces, place in the sink and use an old toothbrush to scrub away any food debris and rinse with hot water thoroughly to finish off. Remember to place both parts back in the dishwasher, ensuring the filter clicks into position. Consult your dishwasher manual if you are unsure - most dishwasher manuals are available online from the manufacturer’s website.
Step 4: Clear the Spray Arms
The spinning arms (also called spray arms or jets) are located inside the dishwasher at the top and rotate at high speeds whist spraying water, blasting off food and dirt. Over time spray arms and jets get clogged up with leftover food, grease and limescale, meaning the cleaning cycle is less efficient. This can result in poor dishwashing performance with waste food still stuck on dishes after a wash cycle has ended. Finish Dishwasher Cleaner can take care of the grease and limescale, however larger pieces of food may need to be dislodged.
Using a tooth pick or other small instrument, clear the holes of any debris that might block the water flow.
